SECONDMENTS TO EUROPE
As part of mtFOIEGRAS Dr Hannah Rosa and PhD student Eliane de Menezes are off on secondment! Hannah is over in Lisbon for 2 weeks, back at Associação Protectora dos Diabéticos de Portugal and attending the EASD NAFLD and EGIR study group meetings.
Eliane will be spending 3 months at Mediagnost in Tubingen, Germany, to develop methods for evaluating mitochondrial dysfunction in NAFLD.

Dr Hannah Rosa has completed her 2-week secondment at Associação Protectora dos Diabéticos de Portugal working with Professor Paula Macedo to set up a collaboration looking at mitochondrial DNA copy number in patients with non-alcoholic liver disease (NAFLD).
Safa Khan has started her 3 month secondment at CEDOC - Chronic Diseases Research Center, New University of Lisbon, where she will be looking at mitochondrial dysfunction in mouse models of NAFLD and diabetes.

From sunny Lisbon to sunny London, Maria is visiting on secondment from CEDOC - Chronic Diseases Research Center, New University of Lisbon for 3 months. Maria will be measuring MtDNA content in her NAFLD model as part of the ongoing mtFOIEGRAS RISE programme, funded by the EU.

Lightning talk and poster: Evaluating diabetic complications as acquired mitochondrial disease.
Dr Afshan Malik presented a novel mechanism by which hyperglycemia-induced early systemic damage to MtDNA contributes to the development of diabetic complications, suggesting that diabetic complications could be considered as an acquired mitochondrial disease.

Poster presentation: Cell-free mitochondrial DNA in circulation in patients with diabetes and diabetic kidney disease.
Mitochondrial DNA (MtDNA), resembles bacterial DNA and is largely un-methylated. If damaged it can accumulate outside the mitochondria and elicit an inflammatory response via activation of the TLR9 pathway. We recently reported that patients with diabetes (DC) had increased MtDNA in whole blood compared to healthy controls (HC). Conversely, patients with diabetic nephropathy (DN) had lower MtDNA than DC patients. The objective of the current study is to determine if changes to MtDNA content seen in patient whole blood samples are due to alterations in circulating, cell-free MtDNA or increased cellular MtDNA in blood cells.
RISE networking MEETING (Tübingen, Germany)
9-10th October 2017
Mediagnost and Microbiolytics, (Germany) hosted a project networking meeting to bring together representatives of mtFOIE GRAS (RISE) projects partners. This meeting aimed at facilitating the collaboration and knowledge sharing among project beneficiaries and at creating synergies for effective project implementation and coordinated results. All project representatives worked to identify common ground for collaboration and actions were agreed upon for the upcoming secondments among partners. The meeting was overall positively perceived by the participants who made constructive recommendations and requested that meetings of this type recur in the future.
After the networking meeting participants had a wonderful chance to enjoy the beautiful scenery of Tübingen in Germany. (Source mtFOIECRAS)

Poster presentation: Diabetes induced changes in circulating and kidney mitochondrial DNA: a potential novel pathway of renal damage.
We recently showed that circulating mitochondrial DNA (MtDNA) levels are an independent risk marker in patients with diabetic nephropathy (DN) and proposed that diabetes induced early systemic changes in MtDNA may be involved in DN. To test this hypothesis, in the current study we investigated the early effect of diabetes on circulating and renal MtDNA levels in the Streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic mouse model.
